Malaika and I, circa November 2014. This was our last CSA pickup as a team after farming together for 3 years. Always plenty of silliness... then I went home and bawled my eyes out.

Malaika and I, circa November 2014. This was our last CSA pickup as a team after farming together for 3 years. Always plenty of silliness... then I went home and bawled my eyes out.

It all started when...

We met as interns at The CSG at Genesis Farms way back when. We got along well, but neither of us anticipated that we'd stay in touch. She was managing a farm in the Poconos during my last year at Lehigh, so when I'd get all stifled and anxious from city life I'd trek to the mountains to help her shovel horse manure or plant garlic for a day. I was planning on doing a one-year Masters program then going to law school after graduation. But then Malaika invited me to be her Assistant Manager up in the mountains. I knew that if I did that I'd be the happiest human. So I said yes. And I was the happiest human.

While working with her there, I realized that what I wanted most was to be a farmer, not a lawyer, so I abandoned the law school plans and have spent an inordinate amount of time shoveling and planting things ever since. My eyes are much happier for less screen time, and I'm much happier for more farm time.

I moved with Malaika to Bucks County to help her start Roots to River. I had an incredible two years working with her, and I still consider the R2R crew to be my close family. It was sad for me to part ways with them to start Locust Light. I'm thrilled that we're all back on the same property. There is much silliness to come.

By the way, if you live in the area you most certainly should sign up for R2R's CSA. It has the best veggies, grown by the best people. I promise.
