13: the herbalism + plant magic course

for people who don’t have time to study

Student: “There’s so much to learn! It’s exciting, but also overwhelming. I don’t know where to start.”

Me: “I hear that! But I like to say that you could just know 10 herbs really well and take care of nearly all your health + magic needs. You don’t need to learn them all.”

Student: “Which 10?”

Me: “ …”

And thus, 13 was born.

I’ve had versions of this conversation many times. It makes sense — there are thousands of herbs, and many schools of study. It’s intimidating. And I’ve loved to reassure people by telling them that they could meet their needs by using just a few herbs really well. But it wasn’t until someone directly asked me which herbs that I realized I should create a simple course that does the thing I said is possible: teaches you to become a confident home herbalist with just 13 herbs.

This is simple-yet-effective herbalism, pared down to the essentials:

FAQ

You say one herb per week for 13 weeks, but the class is 4 months. Why?

Ah, clever student! Yes, there are 13 weekly lessons. But you need time to get your supplies! My goal is for you to do this course in real time because the learning here comes from doing the activities.

This is the schedule:

Week 1: Shopping! Receive your shopping list when you sign up and buy your herbs right away.

Week 2: Get ready! I’ll send you an email to help you get the most out of the course.

Weeks 3-15: Lessons!

Week 16: Final celebratory lesson + something extra.

Which herbs? Which tools?

I’m not gonna tell you ;) But I bet that some are familiar, some are new, and some are old friends that you’ll be working with in new ways.

WIll you tell me where to buy the herbs from?

I’ll include a list of farms + stores with your shopping list. 12 of the herbs are very easy to source at farms and your grocery store. One of them is a little harder to find but I feel very strongly about including it. I’ll give you a list of farms that sell it.

Why just water?

It’s simple. It’s easily available. It’s safe. And it works. People were using water as a solvent for a long time before alcohol, oil, or vinegar were developed. Trust me, it can meet your needs.

I have [insert complex medical condition]. Will this course help me to treat this condition with herbs?

No. For that, you’ll need to meet with a clinical herbalist. Obviously, there are limitations to this approach. This course won’t make you a trained clinical herbalist. But it will give you a solid foundation for using herbs in your life to address a wide variety of issues.

Ok, I’m sold on the herbalism piece. But what about the plant magic aspect?

Plant magic = self-help but with plants.

In each lesson, I talk about the energetic aspects of the herb and how you can use that herb to promote your emotional and spiritual wellness. The Question for Reflection ties into the energetic aspects of the herb.

For example, here’s an excerpt from the course:

Marshmallow reminds us that, when something hurts, the first question to ask is “What will feel soothing to me?” We need to soothe the “burns,” not further aggravate them.

Do I need to memorize anything?

Nope! There’s no studying, no memorizing, and no need to print anything out. You’ll learn by doing a hands-on activity every week.

Who is this for?

13 is for people who…

  • are total beginners

  • have studied herbalism a bit but still lack confidence

  • feel overwhelmed and thus get paralyzed and don’t take action

  • know some herbalism and are curious about plant magic

  • do plant magic and want to learn some herbalism

  • simply want to keep their toes dipped in the plant world with a brief, fun email each week

Sounds like me! How can I start?
